Taxes: How does Herriman compare with other cities?
Occasionally I hear from residents that Herriman has high taxes when we combine our property tax rate with our fees. So, during the budget process a few months ago I did some research contrasting the taxes and fees in Herriman with other comparable cities. Please note that this is not the total property taxes, only the portion you pay to the city. When we add up the various fees and taxes in other cities, you will see that Herriman is competitive with other municipalities. As most of you know, I am not a huge fan of fees. I believe that taxes, not fees, are the best way to go. That being said, fees can have a place in city government and I am reluctantly accepting of fees provided they are low and go directly to the service for which they are being charged, such as the park fee. It is good to see that with the exception of Riverton, Herriman’s taxes and fees are in line with these other cities.
The following are comparisons based on $250,000 of taxable home value:
Herriman: $452.75 – $5/month park fee, $25/month UPD fee – On a $250K home - annual taxes= $92.75 (property taxes) + $60 (park fee)+ $300 (UPD fee)
Bluffdale: $479.75 - $6/month light fee, $3/month for non-subdivision residents; $5/month storm drain fee. On a $250K home – annual taxes to the city= $311.75 (property taxes) +72 (lights)+$36 (non- subdivision residents) +$60 (storm drain)
Draper: $454.50 - No fees
Riverton: $268.00 – $5.41/month light fee – On a $250K home – annual taxes= $204 (property taxes) + $64.92 (light fee)
Sandy: $459.00 - $5/month storm drain fee, some newer subdivisions have $5/month light fee – On a $250K home – annual taxes= $339 (property taxes) + $60 (stormdrain) +$60 (new subdivision fee)
